View at Valley Forge from North Hill

If this is Valley Forge, that would be the Schuylkill River. The Delaware is on the other side of Philadelphia.
  • Library Company of Philadelphia said:
kyle.tucker95 Thank you for noticing this oversight. The description will be corrected to indicate Schuylkill River.

Washington crossing the Delaware.

This picture always reminds me of a joke I read in the NY Herald Tribune years ago. Q: How can you tell if George Washington was in the army or navy? A: He stood up in a boat so he had to be in the army!
  • witty name said:
I just read an article that recreates this more accurately, saying that they wouldn't have used a boat, but a raft tied to cables, due to the transport of animals and cannons. It was also very foggy and George would have been sitting.
