  "The General Manager of the Submarine Boat Corporation is Mr. B.L. Worden, president of the Lackawanna Bridge Co. He has labored with this proposition for many months and has silenced the critics who said it could not be done. The contract taken in September called for laying of keels in December and the crape hangers freely predicted that no keels would be laid before July. To his energy and foresight belong the credit for putting it over. At the little ceremony of the driving of the first rivet Mr Worden said 'You have seen this operation of driving the first rivet. It must be repeated 350,000 times before we launch this ship into the waters of the bay. Six more ships must be built on this way before our bit is done. Beyond you stretches for over half a mile the bulkhead fronting the waters of the bay. We are now seeking to complete the other ways and on each one of the twenty eight we must repeat this operation six times. Our task is unprecedented. These ships must be done in a length of time hitherto impossible. The dead steel that goes into these ships is to be converted into a scourge to the Huns, who now covet our fair land. We want these ships to go forth on errands of comfort to our soldiers and to bring consternation and confusion to our enemies."
