  The ball he is holding is a "medicine ball." I am old enough to remember them...we even used them when I was in high school. They were balls full of lead pellets, so they sometimes weighed close to 40 pounds. Typically, two or more guys would pass the ball to each other to build up strength. Somewhere there is a famous photo of Babe Ruth working out with one. As far as I know, they are no longer manufactured.

Hooverball is a medicine ball game invented by President Herbert Hoover's personal physician to help keep then-President Hoover fit.
