We had those third of a pint bottles of milk as well, they were awful. There was no refrigeration so in the summer the milk went off in the heat, in winter the bottles were stored on the radiators to stop the milk freezing solid and so it went off. The opposition might have taunted "Maggie Thatcher, milk snatcher." but the children forced to drink the stuff rejoiced.

We liked it & I don't remember it ever being off.

br@mbly Your school probably stored it better. Mine had no refrigeration, so on hot days in summer it sat in the sun, warmed up and went off. In winter it froze in the early morning frost, was layered on the old fat radiators to melt, became luke warm and went off.

I remember our school dinners arriving in containers like this, by van, at the church hall over the road from the school. (I hated them, and the smell...) -that was at Llanfrechfa, Mon, in the late 60s.

Dru, this was my Junior school! The dinners were cooked off-site and delivered in those big containers. I cannot remember anything like this canteen-style service. We had family-style 8-man dinners and all sat down to eat together until I was well into secondary school.
