This remarkable action shot obviously was not a summertime photo, but on another occasion, in August, 1913, Emil Seelig's horses won several ribbons in harness racing at a three-day competition at Hollywood Park race track, Monmouth County, Long Branch, New Jersey. His "Emil Seelig Kaffee" was an international brand of coffee, with a high chicory content. Thanks Wystan, for the links. Wish we knew more about where this photograph was taken. At the very least we will add the missing word "horses" to the title, but hold off making major changes until we learn more.

NYT of November 24, 1912, has a report of the running of New York City's four-in-hand race of that year, which paired an Emil Seelig coach against one driven by G. P. Taylor. The race was a revival of an earlier annual event; there had been no coach race in 1911. It was delayed twice by accidents on the course, which were caused by horses slipping on asphalt pavement. The 1912 race began at the Arrowhead Inn (built in 1908, torn down in 1923) in Washington Heights [at 178th St. (now the George Washington Bridge road, or I-95) and Haven Ave.], and ended at Madison Square Garden, where a throng of spectators waited patiently for the arrival of each coach-and-four. Presumaby this photograph shows the beginning of the 1913 race, this time with Seelig and Taylor joining forces against a competitor identified as "Judge Moore." Alas, veterinarians disqualified one of the Judge's horses for lameness, and Taylor won by default. On the other hand, the 1913 NYT story says Taylor drove a yellow coach. Does the coach in the photo look yellow? The 1913 story doesn't say where the race began.

The driver is E. Fownes. The other guy in the front is Paul A. Sorg. Check other Library of Congress photos and you'll see this matches up with a close up shot of Fownes & Sorg.

Poking around the streetview linked above, I notice that the business is still called Lake House, and they have a more modern CTC sign at the far end of the frontage.
