Does anybody know when/why the clock was replaced/updated? This photo shows the older, very ornate clock with roman numerals on a plain wall. Current photos show a clock face with arabic numerals in a subdued color scheme flanked by two windows.

My google skills are failing me on this one. What deep, dark secret are the city fathers (Stadtväteren?) of Basel trying to hide?

Seuss., in my quick searches I couldn't find a date the clock was replaced. I did find this photo on the Portal to Texas History, from the University of North Texas, probably taken around WWII, texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth613020/m1/1/. We actually have a travel poster from 1939 which is an illustration, not a photo, but shows the old clock, www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2009633623/.

The clock visible in the photo was installed in 1838. During a renovation in 1933, the original condition was largely restored.

From the Church of Ireland wiki - "...The tower houses six bells, three of which are Ireland's oldest bells, dating from 1423. The bells were rung for the Angelus and after the Reformation continued to be rung every morning and evening to call the people to and from their work. Due to the fragile state of the tower they were not rung between 1898 and 1983 [ie at the time of this photo]. After the tower was strengthened the bells were retuned in 1983. One of them, the tenor, was recast in memory of Alexander E. Donovan (1908-1982), who was closely connected with the church. They are now rung every week.... "

Tato brána se nachází ve městě Stará (Old) Boleslav, nikoliv ve městě Mladá (New, Young) Boleslav. Loc: 50°11'41.823"N, 14°40'25.799"E. Při zvětšení se zdá, že na jednom z plakátů je vidět rok konání nějaké sportovní akce 1937. To by mohlo být časové zařazení fotografie. Ale nejsem si jistý – mohlo by se ověřit na originálu.

MONUDET: Once again you gave us the right location - you're really of a great help to us! :) This gate is indeed situated in Old Boleslav (Stará Boleslav) and not in New Boleslav (Mladá Boleslav). I found a modern photo of the gate on Wikipedia. It's taken from a different angle and the building close to it in the old photo is gone: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Stara_Boleslav.JPG You also gave another very useful hint: I looked at the poster you mention in a high resolution scan. It says 1901 - 1927 Vsesportovni Slavnost. (Advertising some kind of sports festival?) Now we know more precisely when these Czech photos might be taken. Thanks a lot! / Díky moc! /Anna B.
