Just a few miles down the road from here. The land still looks much like this, but with more trees. It's odd to see such an old photo that (other than the horse and buggy) could've been taken yesterday on just about any rural road a few miles from here.

It's a shame there are JPG compression artifacts on these photos. And maybe some unsharp mask artifacts as well? Hey government worker, wake up.

Thank you so much for engaging the Library of Congress in the new age of photo sharing. It is much appreciated by this citizen and I'm sure by many others. The LOC is one of the few stops in Washington I have yet to visit, and this gives me a window into what I've been missing. I can't wait to see the real thing next time I'm in DC.

There is no sense of motion in the photo. The cart appears to be stopped. Perhaps for photographic reasons?

Labeled 2609-1, which may imply that this of Blackfeet, since 2609-2 is www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/3029424179/ and of a Blackfoot chief from Montana.

Would I be able to use this for an upcoming Aboriginal docudrama? We are looking for free photopgraphs because we need close to 1600, and this picture would be of great help. If you need more information please let me know

Obviously a posed photograph. The First Nation women are wearing nicely adorned clothing, as is the one horse. The women would have worn more utilitarian clothing if they were going to be butchering buffalo but maybe the horse was a "clothes human." In any case, First Nation people had long stopped hunting buffalo by the 1900s as white hunters slaughtered the great herds for their skins more than 30 years earlier. When they did set out to hunt buffalo, they wouldn't have paraded slowly past a white man and his camera as both were few and far between in the days of the great herds.
