Born in Prussia, he emigrated to the United States in 1914. He was distantly related to Chess World Champion Emanuel Lasker with whom he is sometimes confused." At left is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savielly_Tartakower "Savielly Tartakower (also known as Xavier or Ksawery Tartakower, less often Tartacover or Tartakover; 21 February 1887 – 4 February 1956) was a Polish and French chess player. He was awarded the title of International Grandmaster in its inaugural year, 1950. Tartakower was also a leading chess journalist and author of the 1920s and 1930s."

    The date written on the negative is 4/12/24. This will have been taken at the international chess championship that took place in New York in the Alamac hotel in March-April 1924. See, for instance, www.chess.com/blog/SamCopeland/the-top-10-chess-games-of-... which has a group photo of the players. The championship was a double round robin with 11 players and lasted from March 15 to April 12. Given that the placards behind the players are not correct, I suspect this is a staged photo after the conclusion of the event.

    Thanks swanq, we'll add that info to the catalog record. They should have made them play the championship with pieces like that large rook in the background.
