Fancy having a lion, tiger, horse, goat, and monkeys living next door? Poor Mr Jarvis did. Read about 'Queensland's worst neighbour' at our John Oxley Library Blog: blogs.slq.qld.gov.au/jol/2010/02/05/queenslands-worst-nei...

I can confirm there are two lions in that photo. The lions were obtained from Melbourne zoo and integrated into the act. It was first performed in Brisbane in May 1903 Ref: THE "INNER LIFE" OF A MODERN CIRCUS. (1903, May 23). The Queenslander (Brisbane, Qld. : 1866 - 1939), p. 22 Supplement: Unknown. Liz Clark Thank you for confirming where the lions came from. Great to read the article from the Queenslander about Wirth's Circus. We will add this detail to the image record. Thank you

10 years up and down in that cage 50 men to a deck and nearly 2000ft at the deepest point, then 8 miles under the North Sea. Hard graft. The heat it was like Dante's Inferno.
