I'm sure that he was just thrilled to be standing in the water and mud . Allies were ordered not to give up any ground ( that dictated were the tranches were placed ) , on the other hand Germans were opting for high ground to keep them relatively dry. Guess were all the stuff from German trenches end up ?

In 1899, the Russian Tsar ordered construction of the city of Dalny as a major Asian seaport at the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway. It is now the city of Dalian, a seaport in south Liaoning Province, in northeastern China, in the region once known as Manchuria.
