"This impressive bronze portrait statue, created by American sculptor George Edwin Bissell (1839-1920), depicts Mayor Abraham De Peyster (1657–1728). Born in New Amsterdam (now known as “Manhattan”), De Peyster came from a prosperous mercantile family. He quickly ascended the City’s political ladder, occupying almost all of the important colonial offices, including alderman, mayor, member of the king’s council, and acting governor. De Peyster amassed great wealth, and by the end of his life he is said to have been one of the city’s wealthiest merchants." --NYC gov parks The statue was originally placed in the center of Bowling Green Park in 1896, at a site once occupied by a statue of King George III. It was removed to Hanover Square Park in 1972, and is currently in storage whilst Hanover Park undergoes redesign as the British Memorial Garden, and a new site is selected for reinstallation.

This is one of Galway’s great stories. It is said that in 1493, the mayor and magistrate of Galway James Lynch FitzStephen, hanged his own son from the window of his home. Lynch's son confessed to have murdered a man, a Spanish merchant sailor in the care of the family who had romanced his girlfriend. When no one could be found to carry out the execution, Judge Lynch hanged (or lynched as the practice became known around the world after this event) his son himself, ensuring that justice prevailed, before retiring into seclusion. The building Mr. Hart was in is gone, but the 3 storey building two doors to the right is still there, and in slightly better nick today, so Hart is on Market Street (streetview links fixed, I hope).

In the distance, I see trusses of the railway viaduct. The Galway to Clifden line was started in 1890, opened in 1895.

Could be. There's not much left of the houses in the picture.
