SHOP THEFT. -- At North Shields Mary Scott, or Wilson (40), single, Bolton, was charged with stealing a sealskin jacket and topcoat, value 15s, the property of Jane Scallon, general dealer, 41 Dotwick Street. -- The prosecutrix stated that on Saturday afternoon she missed the topcoat from her shop, and saw the prisoner walking along the street with it. She followed the prisoner and recovered the coat. On returning to the shop she missed the sealskin jacket, and gave information to the police. -- A little girl deposed to seeing the prisoner take the coat from a nail in Mrs Scallon's shop. -- P.C. Smith said he arrested and charged the prisoner on Saturday. She replied, "They're mine." That morning, when charged, she said, "I was drunk." Prisoner was committed for one month with hard labour. --- Shields Daily Gazette, 14 Dec 1903, page 3
