My grand father came from the Tyne and went South to find work and got a job on this ship as a waiter. He was chosen over the mass of men chasing the work in those days because he could play the cornet (he was in the Salvation Army). So he was a waiter and also played in the ships band. His favourite hymn was, "My father is rich in houses and land"

Norman - Eastbourne Your dad would I am sure have had some interesting tales to tell, he sound to be an interesting chap.

Interestingly, my Grandfather's home in Southampton, was flattened by German bombing during WW2. (My mother worked in a shadow Spitfire factory). They were rehoused in Wimborne some 30 miles away and my mother went to work in the local electricity showroom where she met my father and later married in Wimborne Minster.

Hard to believe that something like this would turn into a beautifull and majestic ship.
