For a while I felt sorry for them because they stole to stay alive (hunger). Looking deeper into it they were starving because they rarely attended their regiment (free food) and because of this had no money for food outside their regiment.

She seems devastated about this, but, she also has previous offences.. I've Googled Summervile, Durham City, and was surprised to see the properties are quite decent - her father being a butcher would likely have afforded to live there.
