The English Wikipedia page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rupprecht,_Crown_Prince_of_Bavaria indicates that the cause of his early death was polio.

Thanks to both of you for your research. It looks as though that postcard from the V&A was the source of Bain's image, artolog. And they include a great description of his clothing as well as a date, the year he died. We'll add some of this information to the record the next time we update.
