Signalling station

The "sight and telegraph equipment" is a "O.L. type" (O.L. for Oliver Lucas - who invented it in WWI) daylight signalling lamp mounted on a heliograph tripod. The daylight signalling lamp uses a telegraph key (held in the helmeted figure's right hand) on the battery/carrying box to operate. Here's the daylight signalling lamp ("Lucas Lamp") diagram from the 1917 manual, showing the telegraph key mounted to the box (click on the image below and scroll down to read the text of the manual) Here's a Flickr photo of the parts of a daylight signalling lamp: Here's a link to a modern photo of one in the collection of the Imperial War Museum: www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30005045 Here's a link to another John Warwick Brooke WWI photograph of one in action, with the lamp hoisted on an improvised pole. The signaling box is very clearly seen in this one. www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205219556
