The Times December 15 1916 “List of Casualties” Second Lieutenant John Homfray Addenbrooke, North Staffordshire Regiment, attached Manchester Regiment, only son of the Rev. J. G. and Mrs Addenbrooke, was born 1896, and educated at Yarlet Hall, Stafford, and Marlborough College where he gained a foundation scholarship, and later the Senior Mathematcal Scholarship. In January 1914 he was articled to Mr Arthur Collins, chartered accountant of Bristol, and in October of the same year he joined the ranks of the Royal Fusiliers (P.S.B.). He went to the front in November 1915, and returned to England in April last, and trained for a commission at Cambridge. On September 5 he was gazetted to the North Staffordshire Regiment, and went again to the front on October 26. He was killed by a sniper on November 23, the day after he went into the trenches. His chaplain writes "Though he had not been long with us he had gained the respect and esteem of his men, who would do anything for him".
