Seven years after completing the Comeragh, London and Glasgow Steamship Company launched the 940 ton S.S. Dunbrody in 1886. Ultra modern she was built with refrigerated cargo holds, which were lit by electricity. It was a fine three-masted cattle carrier with passenger accommodation which included a specially wide berth in a single state room for the comfort of a portly Lord Waterford, who frequently crossed the Irish sea in her. Again the Avon continued its jinx on Waterford ships, with the Dunbrody going ashore there twice. The most serious episode was on 23rd December 1896 when her bow became pinned on a rock by the falling tide. On the lower tide she presented an awkward salvage problem, there being no hope of lifting her off. It was boldly decided to blast the rock away from beneath her, risking damage to the hull. After blasting, she slid backwards into deeper water and partially sank, as had been foreseen. From here.

Sold in 1912 to the Clyde Shipping Co. Renamed 'Arklow' after being sold by the Waterford S.S. Co. Scrapped in 1931. The Clyde S.S. Co. did business in Cork, Waterford, Galway Bay, the Shannon estuary and Limerick. I think they would have dropped any small cargo to any port on the way.

I cannot believe that this fine shot of a ship on the rocks has resulted in just 3 comments so far on this stream????? It's a cracker of a shot with lovely detail and a great variety of boats and spectators to see. Dunbrody is a very common name for ships in that region with the "Dunbrody Famine Ship" replica moored at the quay in New Ross, Co. Wexford! That original Dunbrody was a 3 masted barque built in Quebec and intended to bring timber and guano to Ireland. She was fitted with bunks and ended up carrying emigrants from famine afflicted Ireland to Canada. She was famous for NOT being a coffin ship but thanks to the good work of her captain's getting the vast majority of her passengers safely to their new life!

Is this the Avon in Bristol? Certainly the tidal range looks right.

Apologies Emma, I've only just seen this comment. Glad you liked it. Not much uptake as yet, but I haven't really promoted it directly to them. I have now set it though to automatically post comments when geo or date suggestions are made and are awaiting approval (as you saw here) so I suspect more people will become aware of it. So far there have been 316 geo suggestions and 182 date suggestions across all Commons images, but over a half of these remain unapproved. I'm just working on some functionality that would allow you to set challenges, for example to create a set and then promote those amongst your users. Would that be of interest? You can of course already promote a link to any individual image in the form www.whatsthatpicture.com/flickr/commons/photo.php?photo_i... (using the image ID from the photo page url) or to a search on your images, for example www.whatsthatpicture.com/flickr/commons/search.php?q=&... is all your non-geotagged images dated pre-1900 (I can see some quite obvious ones I could get started with!)
