They married in 1931. Josephine was Theodore's second wife; his first died in 1927. Theodore died on vacation in New Hampshire. Their son Theodore Shear Jr. is also an archaeologist, a professor at Princeton.

The name "Temple of Theseus" was attributed to the monument under the assumption it housed the remains of the Athenian hero, but inscriptions in the temple later associated it firmly with Hephaestus, patron god of metal working and craftsmanship.
