This is Harold Clarence Jaquith [note spelling]. His New York Times obituary Apr 21, 1943 says he was president of Illinois College from 1933 to 1938, Director of Near East Relief in Istanbul and Athens from 1920 to 1929, and Provost of Trinity College, Hartford, CT. The obit isn't on the internet in full text but it is available on ProQuest. There is also an article in the New York Times from Jan 20, 1926 describing his marriage to Marie Harin. The article says she was a Russian aristocrat who fled the revolution and went to work for Near East Relief where she met Mr. Jaquith. That article is also on ProQuest.

I think this photo must be later then 1915 also. He mostly seems to have been in the news in the 1920s when he was Director of Near East Relief helping Armenian and Greek refugees in Turkey.

j3net and artolog, Thanks for the further details on Mr. Jaquith, and his activities. We can add more to the record when we update. artolog: We have not been able to find an explanation why the Bain News Service sometimes had much later negatives numbered and inserted in the sequence with earlier negatives. They numbered the negatives, and adhered to a chronological sequence most of the time, but there are these chunks of images from the 1920s that do crop up in the middle of an earlier sequence. One day we'll crack the code as to why. (When you see both an early date and a later date on one negative, we presume the later date could reflect the 'last used' date or the date of acquisition or purchase.) It's an excellent question!

The city was renamed Yerevan (Ереван) in 1936. Ernest Alfred Yarrow (21 February 1876 – 26 October 1939) was a Christian missionary and a witness to the main Armenian Genocide of 1915. He is also known for his leadership of a relief effort carried out by the Near East Foundation that saved and cared for tens of thousands of Armenian refugees.
