    At that time, cycling was the preserve of the gentry and well-off. Bicycles were very expensive before mass production and besides, it would have been consider socially pretentious for anyone lower than middle-class to be seen cycling.

    And look how they were dressed for their bicycle tour. Especially the ladies in their long dresses.

    Gerhard ....and that's why ladie's bicycles traditionally have no crossbar. In those days, cycling was the preserve of the wealthy and so when out on a leisurely cycle one had to look one's best....not let the side down.
