    poor Alsace, torn between France and Germany between 1870 and WWII. In various periods, Germans and French each oppressed the other. It declared independence for 11 days after the Armistice only to be occupied by French troops yet again and went through a period of Frankification and expulsion of Germans. Like Quebec, some regions had comfortably had signs in both French and German before WWI and people generally got along.
