The very same photograph appears in the Fine Arts Journal, Vol. 35 (November 1917), p. 62, where it says that “[…] Captain Edgar C. Ackermann of the 13th London Regiment now serving with the British Expeditionary Forces in France is the President of Arthur Ackermann & Sons, of London, New York and Chicago, and the great grandson of the founder of this famous house. During the last six months he has been in all of the heaviest fighting on the western front, and this photograph, taken during a brief furlough, is therefore another bit of human interest from the great war.”

The 3 year old Edgar C, born Eltham Kent, was recorded on the 1881 census at a dwelling in Eltham – no name or number is given although the property next door is called Walton House. The family name is transcribed as “Ackerman” on the Genes Re-united site, (and probably on several others).

Head of the household is Arthur A, aged 50 and a Publisher from Blackheath, Kent. His 38 year old wife Anna M is from Ireland. Their other children at this time are:-

The Ackermans\Ackermanns have 5 live in servants.

On the 1891 census the 13 year old Edgar C is recorded as a Boarder at a school in Compton Place Road, Eastbourne, Sussex. At the same school is a 14 year old Harold A Ackermann – the birthplace of both boys is given as Blackheath, Kent. I suspect that’s Edgars brother. His father and mother are now living at 86 Walton House, Thames Street, Walton. His mother Anna gives her birthplace as Dublin. Arthur G (16) is listed as an Art Student. Other children are Ethel, Kathleen and a younger daughter Sybil, (aged 6, born Walton, Surrey). There are three house servants.

On the 1901 census the 23 year old Edgar C, now working as a Publisher is back living with his widower father. His birthplace is recorded as Lee, Kent. The family are living at 25, Belsize Crescent, Hampstead, London. What looks like a contemporary picture can be seen in the galleries here.

There are also two live in servants. The family name is once again mis-transcribed as Ackerman.

Edgar does not appear to be on the 1911 census under either spelling of his surname, but given his likely arrival in New York at the end of January of that year, perhaps this isn’t so surprising. His 80 year old Father, now described as a Retired Fine Art Dealer, was recorded as the head of the household at Sussex House, Cedar Road, Sutton, Carshalton, Surrey. Living with him are his children, Gerald Ackermann, (aged 35, single and an Artist) and Sybil, (aged 25 and single – place of birth given as Waltham on Thames, Surrey). There are then three live in servants.

In the London Gazette edition of the 4th January 1921 in the List of Tradesmen who holds Warrants of Appointment to Queen Alexandra from the Lord Chamberlain to Her Majesty, with authority to use Her Majesty’s Arms. These Warrants do not carry the right to fly Her Majesty’s Standard, or to use the word “Royal”, appears the name of Arthur Ackermann and Son Limited, Printsellers of London.
