  Living in Telemark, my husband drove me to this hotel once, and we stopped and had coffee from a thermos in our car here. It is still as interesting and a remarkable structure. Next time we'll have to go inside. It is also a very special drive to Dalen. The parking lot is now where the grass is, though is luckily not large.

  I stayed there last summer. Fantastic! Almost everything is kept in the old style. Wonderful to find to a top hotel with no TV in the room! Hotel homepage: www.dalenhotel.no/ It was built in 1894, so it was probably brand new in this photo. The travelling photographer obviously was onboard a boat going from Skien up the Telemark Canal ending here in Dalen. From here, they went over the mountain to Hardangerfjorden, and crossed from Voss to Sognefjorden. This was apparently a popular trip among the wealthy at that time. It's mentioned in a book about the history of this hotel. Of course, it is still possible and recommendable to do today.
