This image is very distressing for me. I was born in 1939 and we lived by the main western/southern train line at Homebush. Trains went past our house and sometimes stopped at the signals opposite, My grandmother woukd take me onto our front verandah to wave at the men coming home from the war. Many of them were injured. They would call out to me, "g'day Snowy".
When I see an image like this one I think about the one's who didn't come home.

Dear Lulybelle and Indie Pendent Photography,

The three ships which sailed that day were (in peacetime) the Otranto, Orcades and the Orford, of the Orient Line. The Orford had a single funnel and the other two had two funnels. Their names are not prominent on the ships as they were troopships.

Before cheaper air travel, The Orient Line and the P&O Line provided most of the passenger ships sailing between the the UK and Australia.
