    Curious that you post this image just now! I happened to see Frederick Wiseman's long film about the New York Public Library the other day, and there was a longish segment about this image therein, telling the story which you mention above. I've known the image, but never the story until this week, and now I've heard it twice!! Thank you. (I learned also that the animal died in shipwreck enroute to Rome as a would-be gift to the Pope.)
