Two men napping in the foreground on the Three Arch Rocks Trip

People producing powerful pictures!   ;-) William L. Finley and Herman Bohlman began photographing the wildlife on these trips to Three Arch Rocks beginning in 1901. They also witnessed the virtual extermination of thousands of seabirds each week by sportsmen. After studying and photographing the wildlife on the rocks, Finley brought their findings to President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903. Finley showed the images of the wildlife of Three Arch Rocks to Roosevelt and explained the need to protect dwindling populations from hunters and sportsmen. Four years later on October 14, 1907, Finley and Bohlman's efforts were rewarded when President Roosevelt declared Three Arch Rocks a National Wildlife Refuge – the first National Wildlife Refuge west of the Mississippi. Once again, this is great! I also love that the work they were doing at Three Arch Rocks was so monumental, but the image we have up is of men sleeping... I guess they were wiped out from the work. Tiah
