Second Lieutenant Harold Armstrong

  Born in the last quarter of 1893 Dewsbury, West Yorks. The youngest child and only son of Robert Armstrong [b.1869 Wragby, Lincs.] a Draper & Hosier and Clara Alice Armstrong nee Wigglesworth [b.1867 Cleckheaton, Yorks.]. The 1901 census records him living at 65 Daisy Hill, Dewsbury, Yorks. with his parents and older sister, Lilian [b.1893 Dewsbury, Yorks.] [although his year of birth is the same as that of his sister, they are not twins. His birth was registered in the last quarter of 1893 while that of his sister was in the first quarter, so there was less than a year between them [but, obviously more than nine months!] Also living with the family are a domestic servant and five other servants whose employment details indicate that they were employees of his father’s business. Not found in the 1911 census but his parents, sister and a domestic servant are now living at 65 Westgate, Dewsbury. His Medal Records Card shows that he had served with the Yorkshire Dragoons in the rank of Cpl. He was commissioned on 2nd June 1916 and served with the Northumberland Fusiliers. The card further states that he was missing and reported killed on 14th November 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
