I believe A.C.S. is a typo for ASC- Army Service Corps.

Gunner writing a letter home

Nice shot, well-restored. The narrative is also interesting. I wonder if the writer considered that letters were the only way of sending news home? I don't know about WW1, but when I was in uniform and on ops, when we had time we all wrote home, and receiving mail was a real event. I have no doubt that the gunner in the background is especially pleased as it was the gunners' creeping barrage in the battle of Menin Road Ridge that played a major part in the success of the third battle of Ypres. Perhaps they were pleased to be writing home to tell the story, and that they had lived to tell the tale.
