Here I suggest that the two 'helpers' are more likely Army Medical Corps men (see the red cross badge on the sleeve of the man on our left). The left-hand 'helper' is carrying the injured man's boot or boots. The right hand 'helper' is likely carrying the man's rifle. The casualty has a note pinned to his chest. He has possibly already been to the first aid post in the line and is now being carried to a casualty clearing station. Whilst in some pain, he could well have a "Blighty" wound and be sent back to the UK for convalesence. An envious situation from the viewpoint of his comrades left in the line....
