    The "sneak pass" right over the water at the threshold of mach 1 was always my favorite part of San Francisco's Fleet Week airshow. It's always a big crowd pleaser because you can't hear it coming and if your attention is focused elsewhere it's a huge surprise for those watching just on the waterfront. 2005 was a good year for photographers trying to catch the Prandtl-Glauert shockwave hitting the water. This photo, by another photographer, was taken the day before: www.airliners.net/photo/USA-Navy/McDonnell-Douglas-F-A-18... This video, taken years later from high ground, shows just how fast the jet is actually moving: flickr.com/photos/unclejefejefe/8066032628/in/album-72157... Regardless, that's a wonderful photo and thanks for providing me with such happy memories.

    Wonderful photo! Ditto, I am happy LC is doing this. I was 1 month old when this was taken, in Illinois to boot, and this scene brings back fond memories. The more railroad pictures you post, the better! Bravo and thank you.

    This is a real treasure of the public domain. I think it is fantastic to make these available through Flickr, the best photo sharing site around. It is a shame they have not uploaded the full resolution images. The LOC's own site will often have 20MB scans of these photos. I've made some beautiful prints of New York's Penn Station from there.
