There might be mistake in the title of this image. The 2 funnelled warship in the background looks like the cruiser USS Chicago. But the 4 funnelled ship in the foreground is not USS Boston. She looks more like a Bainbridge Class Torpedo Boat Destroyer such as the USS Bainbridge, USS Decatur etc.

I am not a naval expert, but I do enjoy researching old images like these. To identify your ships I used the website www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/index.htm and I searched through the ships of the US Navy. You can also try Googling their names as USS Chicago. I have just tried it with USS Boston, and your ship is definitely not the 2 funnelled cruiser that was launched in 1884, and was still on duty in 1905. I hope that this helps. Cliff

After a good catch by Picture Esk, we were able to determine that this photograph was mislabeled. After some careful research in the Naval Historical Center, it became pretty clear that the ship in the background of this photograph is the USS Boston. Unfortunately, we have not had any luck accurately describing the ship in the foreground, which is most certainly not the USS Chicago. So, way to go Picture Esk, and if anyone else has any information, please let us know.

I have to second Picture Esk, here. That can't be the USS Boston. The pattern of windows on the sides of the ship is completely wrong in the Naval Historical Center pictures you linked. In particular, the (what I assume are) large gun ports are missing entirely. It is also appears to be lacking the rounded projections for the wing turrets on the top deck.
