That guy on the rope is having absolutely no impact, and those soldiers standing on the running boards of the trailing car stuck in the mud, would be far better off standing on the back bumper of the towing car. All the rope guy is doing is putting himself in harms way when the cars do move and he loses his footing and slips and falls and is run under the pulled car. All the guys in the back car are doing is weigh the car down in the mud and making it that much harder to pull out. How if they were all standing on the back bumper or running boards (safer) of the pulling car, they would give its rear tires more traction and help pull things out.

The Motor car was still new to many people , most soldiers would have had little experience of handling a motor car and they are not all like modern motor vehicles to drive

From Bill AVES - This is an IWM (Q1473) photo taken in September 1916 at Maricourt on the Somme. The locomotive is one of the Etat Belge engines used by the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers. Quite why it has been derailed is not recorded, but see my book "R.O.D - the Railway Operating Division on the Western Front" published in Jan 2010 (ISBN 978-1-900289- 993) for more details.

Kromantse Bill - any chance the book will be reprinted (soon) ? Very hard to find for less than a king's ransom.
