Carleton L. Brownson, professor of Greek, formerly of the American School of Classics at Athens, and later instructor in Latin at Yale. He seems to have done a number of translations of Greek texts.

In checking Prints & Photographs Division collections that are not online, I found a matching image identifying him in a handwritten caption as "Carleton L. Brownson, Dean, the College of the City of New [York]" (last word cut off--must have been on a larger mount at one time) and with a stamped credit to "Alman & Co, 590 Fifth Ave., N.Y." We'll add information to the description for the Bain negative when we next update the record.

"Born in Dessau, Max Muller, whose real name is actually Friedrich Max Muller, was a German philologist and Orientalist. He was a founder of the western academic field of Indian studies. A bit more information. She was born in Lansing, Michigan on the 24 August 1878 and was graduated from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) approximately 1900. In the 1901 U Michigan directory, she is listed under Faculty/Staff: FLORENCE HEDGES, A.B., Assistant in Botany. 204 North State Street.
