    Same photo in City of Victoria 2nd ed 1999 p.61. Tung Wah Hospital on Po Yan Street in far centre. Po Hing Fong on the left, Tai Ping Shan Street on the right. The centre area was redeveloped into Blake Garden.

    Area called Tai Ping Shan where poor Chinese lived, some 60 people living in a floor area of 600 sq feet. The poor sanitary condition in this area led to the plague in 1894. Trying to control the plague, HK Govt bought the whole area and demolished it. Part of the area was later built into the Blake Garden. The street running from 6 o'clock to 11 o'clock in Po Hing Fong. The street in the foreground is Po Yan St. Street in the left is Po Yee St. The photo is taken near Tung Wah Hospital. Westerners live in beautiful buildings up in the hill around Caine Road, Robinson Road.
