Audience comments from the Caribbean Photographic Memories session, Leeds West Indian Centre, October 2013: The Pan Am steel band was sponsored by Pan Am Airlines. Arthur France talked about the competitive nature of the early steel bands whose names such as ‘Renegades’ and ‘Invaders’, reflected that they were musically competitive but this could also lead to mass physical battles between rival steel bands. Musical clashes or ‘noise outs’ also occurred in Leeds. Pan Am steel band was very famous; Arthur believes you can still buy on Amazon a DVD of them playing with famous pianist Winifred Altwell. They revolutionised steel pan orchestras, bringing them up to the level of that achieved by a full European symphony orchestras. In 1987 the Pan Am steel band played in Leeds.
