How shameful that this shack was a 'Typical Barbadian House'. This picture depicts the cruel realities of colonialism.

Shameful? In 1946? What are you expecting to see? An apartment block with full air-con? What I find interesting is that this chattel house appears set alone in its own land. I wonder if its a farmer in the countryside? The girls are well dressed (dresses) and the house looks attractive and in good repair. The older girl's hair is combed and the younger girls foot is playfully swinging the door open. A moment of lightness perhaps. www.barbadospocketguide.com/barbados-attractions/great-ho...

Even in 1960 this would have been considered an adequate home. And let me tell you something, many Bajan photographers ,like me are reluctant to post on the net, photos of homes in some of the environs of Bridgetown. The house in this photo is a palace compared to some of the hovels in Cats Castle and like places that you will see today. We cannot still blame colonialism for what obtains today, also 50 years since independence.

The landscape in the background looks like the parish of St. Andrew
