swedes

I'm a kind of a city fella but I always thought swedes were blonde??? Seriously I thought that swedes were smaller and whiter than these. Apparently these were rarely used for human consumption until WW1, they were used to feed animals until then. When I was growing up they were referred to as Mangols!

Swordscookie Well, some of this series of photos are described as Swedish Turnips which I think was the photographer hedging his bets!

My instinct is swede, but then according to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutabaga whilst known as swede in most British English speaking countries, this is known as turnip in Ireland!!!

And then according to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnip "The leaves grow directly from the above-ground shoulder of the root, with little or no visible crown or neck (as found in rutabagas)" [rutabaga=swede - see link above!]. This seems to again make these swedes (in the British English sense, but not the Irish sense!) as the ones shown here DO have a neck I feel.

They look like swedes - turnips are much smaller and flatter. Swedes have orange flesh, turnips white.

Just to confuse matters, swedes were known as turnips where I grew up in Yorkshire (1950s) and they're called neeps in Scotland.

So far, the Swedes seem to have it! And [http://www.flickr.com/photos/22562862@N06] isn't there a traditional dish in Scotland that's "something and neeps" or "neeps and something", just like bacon and cabbage here?
