On March 24, 1916, the French passenger ferry SS Sussex was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in the English Channel with great loss of life.

"In May 1916, Germany issued a declaration, the so-called Sussex pledge, which effectively represented the suspension of the "intensified" U-boat campaign."

Among the dead was the Spanish composer Enrique Granados, the subject of several Bain photos from the premiere of his opera in New York a few months before his death. His wife, Amparo, also died in the catastrophe.
