Douglas World Cruise

  • rotec.holger said:
The ship is the American four-funnel destroyer USS Pope (DD-225) on a goodwill tour to Japan in 1924 to back up the coincident arrival of the Douglas World Cruisers flight. The floatplane above should be one of the Douglas DWCs (looks a bit like a Martin SC-1 aka Curtiss CS-1). The writing on te lower right side says location is the port of Kushimoto (Translation by Mr. Hayashi Shigeru).

This is an official Navy photograph taken in summer 1929 at Petersburg, Alaska, showing a view of the Wrangell Narrows looking north toward Fredrick Sound. Kupreanof Island is on the left. The USS Gannet (AM-41) is tied up in foreground. At upper right, the visible signs on the buildings, left to right: Public Dock, New England Fish Co., Marlyn Fish Co.
