It doesn't appear to commemorate anything, though it does tell the time.

One country over from Austria? Maybe from the Dillon family trip to Switzerland in 1901?

Rory Sherlock Pity it was a dull day - doesn't help with the clock time.

"The hourglass, sometimes with the addition of metaphorical wings, is often depicted as a symbol that human existence is fleeting, and that the "sands of time" will run out for every human life.[18] It was used thus on pirate flags, to strike fear into the hearts of the pirates' victims. In England, hourglasses were sometimes placed in coffins,[19] and they have graced gravestones for centuries." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hourglass#Symbolic_uses

It's Bauen, in Switzerland. Streetview won't go there.

Looks better from this side: maps.google.ie/maps?q=ardglass+down&hl=en&ll=54.2...

• derangedlemur said:

Not to be confused with Shane's Castle, which has both a castle and a railway.

• derangedlemur said:

It looks closer to 10:30 than 19:15.

I think my streetview must be a different castle at Ardglass. There's no sundial on the south wall. Or steps or door that match the picture above.
