That's fantastic! The tall steeple which can still be seen along Scotswood Road is in this photo. Of particular interest to me is the fact they appear to be on a sandy beach?! It certainly doesn't look like that now - all thick deep dirty mud..

That tall Steeple is St Stephens church and as you say, can still be seen today, and I believe they are on the sandy shoreline of what was once Kings Meadows Island, which a local tower block took its name from. This apparently is the only known picture of the island which had its own public house and horse racing track...all long since dredged away of course.

Macquarie Street?

Highranger Yes, Number 8 to be precise. Is that where the Mitchell Library now is? The new Lending Branch premises opened in August 1881, so presumably this photo and the others in the series of how it was built are earlier that year. trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13493005

Definitely Macquarie Street! You can see the turrets of the Hospital building further up the road. Today 8 Macquarie is the address of the Eye Hospital.... www.sesiahs.health.nsw.gov.au/sydhosp/ - AG

This is the Iron Church which housed the Lending Library from 1874 after the congregation outgrew it and moved across the road to present day St Stephens. There is a plaque on the footpath outside the current State Reference Library wing remembering the Iron Church. www.gordonmoyes.com/2007/10/25/iron-churches/

State Library of New South Wales Thank you, that makes a lot more sense. These must be photos of the dismantling of the library/church, before its rebuilding at Lidcombe Hospital as a chapel in 1879.

Out of shot on the left is St. Stephen's Church aka The Pepper Canister. This side of the crescent is one of my favourite Dublin streetscapes. I'm still hopping mad that someone gave permission to Starbucks to have a café there! (Just out of sight on the right)
