    It is more likely that the cycles have punctures, the normal way for cyclists to fix a puncture is to turn it upside down like this, the man on the ground may be attempting to straighten a bent part of a cycle, modern quick release wheels and better tyres means you are unlikely to see this now

    Given the limitations on photography at that time it's not hard to believe that many images were staged. But if this was staged then those men should've earned actors' wages. You can feel the tension and fear. Since the War To End All Wars did nothing of the sort, by the time of the second such event there were many valorous war photographers who documented the reality of man's inhumanity to man.
