Engine already running, this famous but ill-fated short flight took off at 5:14 PM and crashed about 15 minutes later when the vibrations from a broken propeller took part of the tail assembly with it, causing Orville to loose control and crash nose-first in front of a crowd of 2000 people. Both were badly injured, but 1st Lt Thomas E. Selfridge (USA) died due to massive skull injuries at 8:10 PM, becoming the first airplane passenger/observer to die in an aviation accident. Selfridge ANGB is named in his honor.
