That is an unusual bird. Too bad that the only other reference I ever heard of the gannet in my life came from Monty Python's Flying Circus' audio skits. 'I don't like the gannet - they wet their nests!' complains the absurd shopper, who is looking for a Book of Britih Birds. 'All right!!' John Cleese, as the book shop clerk, cries, and tears it out. 'There you are sir!' 'I can't buy that. It's torn!'

These look like Victorian taxidermical birds set in outdoor 'looking' scenes - note the neatly placed shells, made up ground setting, plus the wrinkle in paper on wall backdrop. Popular hobby to have exhibits of birds or small animals made to display under large glass domes in wealthy home library or museum collections. One can see a few in modern museums as well.
