  Thanks for your comment. I think Freud would agree with you (see _Civilization and Its Discontents_ for more details). Mennonites do seem to love the outdoors, especially camping. How many other Christian denominations have a camping association?!?!

I wonder whether the WWII era All American Girls Professional Baseball League made baseball a more "acceptable" sport for women and girls, even in Mennonite circles. It would be fascinating to look at the yearbooks of Mennonite colleges and schools from the same time period to see whether girls' / women's baseball and softball teams were common.
