    Fly Girls

The first WASP unit was designated the 319th Army Air Force Flying Training Detachment and they were stationed at the Houston Airport.

Byrd Howell Granger graduated with the first class. She was editor in chief of the WASP newsletter, affectionately titled The Fifinella Gazette. Granger wrote to the Disney Studio in late November 1942 requesting a design. Walt Disney fulfilled the order and one of his artists created the unit's mascot using Fifinella, the female of the Gremlins species. The design was sent to Granger in January 1943.
