The chief mills however were at Ballisodare. Here there was a daily output of 40 tons of flour, 120 tons of maize meal and 20 tons of “Avena” cooked cattle food. There was also a special plant for oatmeal and other cereals. The Avena Mills were worked by turbine water power, and in case of emergency, a large gas engine was available. The height of the falls on the River Uncion were 70 feet, and the power available was 5,000 horsepower. Ballisodare village, and railway station were lit with electric light from the mills. The railway company had sidings where bags of meal and flour were carried on an aerial railway. This transport saved a mile in cartage from one mill to the other. ...
