OV1-20 (upper) and OV1-21 (lower) were launched together. The blue and gold sphere (the OAR-901 subsatellite) was ejected from OV1-20, with the mission "to measure the time and space variation of atmospheric densities to altitudes as low as 76 miles." This was "accomplished by direct measurement of atmospheric drag with a triaxial accelerometter onboard the satellite, and indirectly by analyzing the orbital dynamics" of the subsatellite.
