Second Lieutenant Maxwell Dalston Barrows MC was killed in action as an Acting Company Commander at Ramicourt on the St Quentin Canal on 3rd October 1918. Son of George William Barrows (b. Leeds 1860) and Jane Marguerite Barrows (nee Dalston of Camberwell, London, m. 1897) of 25 Arboretum St. Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Promoted Acting Captain (with Pay and Allowances of Lieutenant) while Acting Adjutant of 5th Battalion wef 5th April 1918. [LG 3rd May 1918]. Reverted to Second Lieutenant on 6th August 1918 [LG 20th September 1918]. Noted that 27-year-old Sergeant William Henry Johnson from Worksop, of 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his single-handed actions at Ramicourt on 3rd October 1918, when he attacked and silenced an emplacement containing two German machine-guns that was holding up his platoon, then continuing further on his own, though now wounded, he bombed and captured another machine-gun.//
